A Note on Men’s Sexual Health

Chapter 56 · Vihang Rahul Vasa

This is a topic that most men hesitate to discuss, even with their doctors. But it is important, and I mention it here because awareness removes the fear of the unknown.

Uncontrolled diabetes can, over time, affect men’s sexual health. High plasma glucose (blood sugar) can gradually damage the small blood vessels and nerves that are essential for healthy sexual function. Erectile dysfunction is a well-documented complication of long-standing, poorly controlled diabetes; some studies also report effects on libido and on semen quality, though these are influenced by many factors, including hormones, weight, and medications. These issues do not appear overnight: they develop gradually when diabetes is poorly managed over an extended period.

The reassuring news is that with good plasma glucose (blood sugar) control, an active lifestyle, and proper medical guidance, many of these issues can be prevented, managed, or significantly improved. If you notice any changes, please speak with your diabetes specialist or doctor openly and without embarrassment: they have seen it many times before, and there are effective treatments available.

A word of caution: if you live with diabetes, do not take any medicine for sexual performance, whether from a chemist, online, or a friend, and including traditional preparations and herbal remedies, without asking your doctor first. Some of these medicines are dangerous with heart and blood-pressure medicines, and many men with diabetes are on exactly those. Your doctor can tell you what is safe for you.
