Type 2 Diabetes and Your Family: A Gentle Word About Heredity
Chapter 54 · Vihang Rahul Vasa
Type 2 Diabetes often has a hereditary component: it tends to run in families. This does not mean your children or siblings will definitely develop Type 2 Diabetes, but it does mean they may carry a higher predisposition than the general population: studies suggest that having a parent with Type 2 Diabetes can increase a person’s risk of inheriting the same.
A simple and caring step you can take is to encourage your close blood relatives, siblings, children, and parents, to get their fasting plasma glucose (blood sugar) and HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) checked periodically, even if they feel perfectly healthy; when to start, and how often, is for their doctor to decide: family history, weight and lifestyle all count. Early detection, when plasma glucose (blood sugar) is in the pre-diabetes range, is the golden window: lifestyle changes at that stage can often substantially reduce the risk of progression to full-blown Type 2 Diabetes. Large studies have shown that disciplined lifestyle change during this window can cut the risk of progression considerably. Think of it as a gift of awareness to your family.
Perhaps the best gift that parents with Type 2 Diabetes can give their children is to teach them, from an early age, how to live a life without being dependent on sugar. Teach them to enjoy food in its natural form, to appreciate balanced meals, and to build habits that do not revolve around sweetness. So even if, by any chance, your children do develop Type 2 Diabetes later in life, they will already be well trained and prepared for what life may throw at them. They will face the situation with ease, with knowledge, and without the shock and panic that catches most people off guard. That early education is not a restriction: it is a head start.
