Life Goes on Beautifully

Chapter 50 · Vihang Rahul Vasa

“The first wealth is health.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Conduct of Life (1860)

I want you to know something important: life with diabetes is still a full, rich, and beautiful life. You can still travel the world, enjoy meals with your family, celebrate festivals, work hard at what you love, laugh with friends, and chase every dream you have. Diabetes does not take away your life: it simply asks you to live it more mindfully. And in many ways, that mindfulness will make your life even better than it was before.

It took me years to learn this. In the early years I said no to things, a dinner invitation, a long journey, a festival sweet offered with love, not because my doctor forbade them, but because I was afraid of them. Today I travel, I eat out, I celebrate, and I do it with a plan in my pocket and a diary in my bag. The chapters that follow are that plan: stress and the mind, travel, family, pets, the money side, and the honest cost of looking away. Control is not the goal of this book. A full life is. Control is simply what pays for it.
