Keep a Diabetes Diary
Chapter 17 · Vihang Rahul Vasa
One of the simplest yet most powerful habits you can adopt is maintaining a daily diabetes diary. It does not have to be elaborate: a small notebook, a notes app on your phone, or even a simple spreadsheet will do.

• Record your plasma glucose (blood sugar) readings: fasting, before meals, and post-meal.
• Note what you ate and approximately how much.
• Record any exercise or physical activity, however small.
• Make a note of how you felt: stressed, tired, happy, unwell.
• Record any medication changes or missed doses.
When you visit your doctor with three months of diary data instead of a single reading, it transforms the quality of the consultation. Your doctor can spot patterns, trends, and triggers that neither of you would have noticed from memory alone. It also helps you understand your own body better, which foods spike you, what time of day is most challenging, and how stress or sleep affects your numbers. This small daily habit can make a big difference over time.
Above all, being adherent is key. Stick to your plan. Keeping the diary is only half the work: actually following through on what your readings tell you is the other half. Diabetes rewards consistency more than perfection. The person who measures every day, takes medicine on time, and follows their food plan most of the time will do far better than the person who is perfect for two weeks and then disappears for two months.
